It was a huge night for Armando Bacot on Tuesday, as the North Carolina star inched this way into becoming the Tar Heels’ all-time double-double leader, tying current record holder Billy Cunningham at 60.

The six-foot-11 senior forward from Richmond, VA, didn’t even need the entirety of the first half to pick up career double-double number 60. With a little over two minutes left in the first half, Bacot picked up point number nine and ten to go along with his 11 rebounds.

After finishing the game against Boston College with 20 points and 16 rebounds, Bacot spoke about what it means to tie the record.

“It was cool. I definitely was going for it today,” explained Bacot. “I came into the game, I said I was going to try to get 20 rebounds, but I kind of gassed out. That second half I thought I was on pace. I was chasing rebounds today.”

Continuing, Bacot elaborated on why he was attempting to get to 20 rebounds on Tuesday, stating he was hoping to close the gap and make it easier for himself to break the record come North Carolina’s next game.

“Coach Hu told me I had about 33 rebounds to get the record. So I was trying to get 20 today, that way it could give me some leg room on Saturday to try and get it,” stated Bacot. “Now I’ve got to go really try hard on Saturday to get it.

Alas, Bacot gave credit where credit is due, jokingly thanking his teammates for all the missed shots they’ve had in their career, allowing him to clean up their mess and pump up his rebounds.

“It means a lot. I guess I can credit Cole Anthony, Caleb Love and RJ Davis for all the missed shots that they’ve shot,” joked Bacot. “I guess I have to give them credit.”

Armando Bacot will be a man on a mission come North Carolina’s next game, as he looks to stand alone at the top during the Tar Heels’ showdown on Saturday with the NC State Wolfpack.
