Bill Belichick contract: North Carolina reveals HC to sign five-year deal, contradicts initial report

North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick’s initial contract length with the Tar Heels has been revealed.
According to UNC’s official release, Belichick agreed to a five-year deal with the university to become the school’s next head football coach. This contradicts earlier reports that Belichick’s deal was three years in length.
The initial report said the deal was worth $10 million per year, but an exact total was not disclosed in the initial press release.
News of North Carolina’s pursuit of Belichick broke last week when he reportedly interviewed to replace Mack Brown in Chapel Hill. Conversations continued and heated up from there, and the two sides met for five hours on Sunday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Belichick’s first comments as UNC head coach were also revealed in the initial press release, along with comments from the athletic director and university chancellor.

“I am excited for the opportunity at UNC-Chapel Hill,” Belichick said. “I grew up around college football with my Dad and treasured those times. I have always wanted to coach in college and now I look forward to building the football program in Chapel Hill.”
Belichick enters the college football space having taken a year off of coaching. Before that, of course, he was the head coach for the New England Patriots where he won six Super Bowls alongside Tom Brady. He has eight rings overall. Considered one of the greatest coaches in the history of the sport, Belichick compiled a 302-165 record as an NFL head coach.
His ties to North Carolina run deep. Belichick’s father, a longtime coach at Navy, served as a coach at North Carolina in the 1950s. Now, he’ll look to carve out his own legacy in Chapel Hill beginning in the 2025 season.
North Carolina still has a bowl game to play this season. They’re set to participate in the 2024 Wasabi Fenway Bowl against the UConn Huskies. Kickoff is set for Saturday, Dec. 28 at 11 a.m. (EST) at Fenway Park in Boston, MA live on ESPN.
