Bill Belichick, Mike Lomardi deliver free pizzas to UNC students for NCAA Tournament game vs. San Diego State

Ahead of UNC‘s play-in game against San Diego State on Tuesday night, several students on campus were in for a special treat. Free pizza.
Not just any free pizza, either. But free pizza delivered by head football coach Bill Belichick and general manager Michael Lombardi.
UNC’s new general manager tweeted a short, slow-motion video of Belichick and himself bringing pizzas to what appeared to be an on-campus building. Later, the UNC football account showed a lengthier video of Belichick delivering pizzas to a fraternity. Check it out below.
Of course, the NCAA Tournament appearance itself for UNC came as at least a mild surprise to many around the college basketball world. Many analysts had projected the Tar Heels to narrowly miss the field after putting together a relatively poor record against teams in the field.
Some analysts even spoke to that weakness on the resume after the field was announced. CBS bracketologist Jerry Palm was among them.
“We were stunned…” Palm said, via John Canzano on Twitter. “Can’t think of another team that had so convincingly proven they were not an NCAA Tournament team to get in the bracket. It’s dumbfounding.”

Who might have earned one of those final NCAA Tournament spots in place of North Carolina is matter of debate, but UNC’s resume was the cause of much of the scrutiny. The Tar Heels had a lot of losses to quality teams.
“To me, that’s my biggest takeaway from this whole thing is for North Carolina, I don’t know how they made the tournament and West Virginia didn’t make the tournament,” ESPN analyst Jay Williams said. “North Carolina had 11 opportunities to play against teams in the field. They only won one of those on a neutral court in December.
“They have four losses to teams that didn’t make the tournament. And you talk about a team like West Virginia who had six Quad 1 wins, they beat Iowa State, they beat Gonzaga when Gonzaga was No. 3 in the country. It [seems] like West Virginia is much more deserving to be in the tournament than North Carolina.”
But all that can be put to rest on Tuesday night with a strong showing that would get UNC all the way into the field of 64.
The game is set to tip off at 9:10 p.m. ET with a broadcast on TruTV.
