Chip Lindsey gives first impression of Drake Maye
Chip Lindsey couldn’t be happier with the golden opportunity to takeover the North Carolina offense, led by Heisman hopeful quarterback Drake Maye.
Speaking with the media after getting to see Maye on the practice field for the first time since he came over from UCF this offseason, Lindsey spoke about his first impression of his quarterback, and let’s just say it was overwhelmingly positive.
“I think the thing first of all, that sticks out to me about him as a person, is he’s kind of an aw-shucks, just kind of a humble guy,” started Lindsey. “He’s not, he doesn’t come across as the guy who people see all over the country, who in my opinion is one of the better ones in the country. He’s very humble. He’s very hard on himself, which is good. Maybe sometimes too hard on himself, but I think he’s earned the respect of his teammates, not just because of how well he played last year, but because of the way he approaches it every day. I think that’s what makes those guys like him special. Been very pleased with that.
“On the field, very attentive. Wants to be coached. For a guy that’s as talented as he is, he wants to be coached on the little details. The fundamentals. Whether it’s footwork. Whether it’s what drop we need to take. Whether it’s communication. How we can do this better. Whatever it is. That’s really something that’s really refreshing, when you’ve got guys that are really talented that also want to be coached.”

Of course, Maye’s on-field ability is what’s become the stuff of public knowledge, but Lindsey was thrilled to see how coachable his quarterback is. The Tar Heels star has a bright future, and his new offensive coordinator wants to cultivate that.
The college football world is expecting a huge season from Drake Maye, and all signs point to it coming under Chip Lindsey’s guidance.
