WATCH: Drake Maye connects with Antoine Green to send NC State game into overtime at the buzzer
North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye has struggled mightily on Friday against the stout defense of the N.C. State Wolfpack. Rest assured, the Tar Heels’ signal-caller found the freon in his veins when his team needed him the most, connecting with Antoine Green in the back of the end zone to send the North Carolina-N.C. State game into overtime in Chapel Hill.
Check it out as Maye tied the game up at 24-24 to send the game into overtime at the buzzer.
It was an incredible play by Maye and he’s made plays like that look rather routine for much of the 2022 college football season. He’s certainly had one of the best freshman campaigns in college football history, there’s no doubt about it. Green was his go-to receiver for much of Friday night, hauling in eight catches for 67 receiving yards and a touchdown (above).

While Maye was garnering Heisman chatter the past few weeks and rightfully so, the Tar Heels losing in back-to-back weeks likely knocked him out of contention. His Heisman hopes for the 2022 season are likely finished. Maye will still be one of the top Heisman Trophy candidates for the 2023 college football season.
N.C. State fourth-string quarterback Ben Finley outplayed Maye on Friday night and was placing the ball in beautiful spots throughout the game in guiding the Wolfpack to a 30-27 victory in double-overtime. The past two weeks have been substandard for the UNC quarterback, and his poor play has been a big reason why the Tar Heels have lost.

But the gifted freshman has carried them on his back for the entire season. Maye has bailed out the UNC defense time and time again this year. We’ll have to see if he can get back on track in the ACC Championship Game and in the ‘Heels bowl game.
