Drake Maye evaluated North Carolina’s offensive transition during the spring portion of practice with new offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey

So far, so good according to the Tar Heels quarterback. It was an adjustment, but it seems like the UNC offense won’t miss a beat this year.

Maye detailed what changed under Lindsey ahead of the 2023 campaign.

“Coming into this first practice, I kinda knew how it would go,” Maye said after the spring game. “New offensive coordinator obviously, some new plays, kind of a new job for me out there. I’m getting the signals and giving them, rather than everybody gets the signals from the coach. So I think we (did it) really well. I think we started off better than I thought and then plateaued towards the middle and at the end, I thought we finished strong. So I think overall, I’m really proud of the guys. It’s fun out there.”

Maye also talked about the break for the team after the spring game, despite being ready to ramp up for the upcoming season.

“I’ve been saying to a couple of different reporters, playing the spring game kind of gets you ready for the season, but you gotta wait a whole summer,” Maye said. “So kind of a bummer. But overall, it’s been a blast. And I think spring ball is for you to kind of learn stuff and improve. You want to try out (new things) in spring … We’re (all in on) coach Lindsey, who relays it to me and then me to (my teammates).”

In his first season as the starter, Maye put up huge numbers for the Tar Heels. He had 4,321 yards, 38 touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 66.2% completion percentage.

“I think getting back to the ACC Championship and, obviously, our goal of winning the ACC Championship. Whatever that takes,” Maye said of his goals this season. “11, 12 (wins). I think we could have won, probably, 12 last year. So (I’m) looking forward to it. Coach Brown says win all the games so that’s obviously our goal. We don’t expect to go out there and strap them up expecting to lose. I know I surely don’t.”
