Drake Maye explains how he prepares for the big moments
Drake Maye is ready for the big moments and the North Carolina Tar Heels couldn’t be in better hands with their quarterback.
“I almost do it every day for Coach Brown, and we start off in a meeting, he keeps on saying that nine is not enough and we lost, you know, some close games there at the end, didn’t finish well,” Maye said. “We finished some close games up.
“So I think just you know, I think the big thing is just take a look back at what plays that offensively me and obviously the whole offense can fix or eliminate to create the momentum or change the impact of the game. I think the offense is one or two plays as Coach Brown always says and it’s a different outcome. So just so you know, you practice for those moments.”
North Carolina made it to the ACC Championship Game last season, but lost to Clemson. Safe to say, the Tar Heels and Maye don’t want that again.
“Yeah, I think getting back to the ACC Champion and also our goal is to win the ACC Championship,” Maye said. “So I mean, whether that takes 11 or 12 (wins) we could have won probably 12 last year, so looking forward to it. Coach Brown’s won all the games (in his career), so that’s obviously our goal. We want to go out there and I’m strapping (not) expecting to lose.”

In his first season as a starter, Maye put up huge numbers. He threw for 4,321 yards, 38 touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 66.2% completion percentage.
Maye in big moments could work out quite well for North Carolina. Should the Tar Heels win the ACC this coming season, that might result in a College Football Playoff appearance for the first time in school history.
If there’s a shot for big moments, Maye is the quarterback to do it in North Carolina.
As a member of the Class of 2021, Maye was a four-star recruit out of Charlotte (N.C.) Myers Park, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 3 overall prospect in the state, the No. 8 quarterback in the class and the No. 45 overall prospect in the class.
