Drake Maye shares thoughts on North Carolina spring game
The North Carolina Tar Heels just wrapped up their spring practices Saturday afternoon with the team’s spring game at Kenan Memorial Stadium. A handful of question marks need to be answered for the Tar Heels before the start of the 2023 season. But one thing they do not need an answer for is what to do at quarterback, as Drake Maye has returned for another season at UNC.
Maye enters the season as a favorite to win the Heisman Trophy next season, and looked the part on Saturday. Following the spring game, the Tar Heels star shared his thoughts on his performance and what things he was focused on Saturday.
“We moved the ball well, down in the redzone,” said Maye. “I gotta make a few better decisions. Missed one or two that I’m kind of mad about that I’ll remember. But overall, good day. I’m proud of the guys, and (it’s) just fun being out here.
“…That’s the big thing I’m harping on; footwork is always for any quarterback at any level. Just working on getting better, (and) fine-tuning things. I think that last sack, on fourth down, I slid into pressure. So just stuff like that, trying to avoid it to help the team. And overall, I felt like we had a good day.”
Maye looked sharp in North Carolina’s spring game as he completed ten of his 13 pass attempts for 155 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. However, he did take a sack in the game, which will stick with him through the offseason. Still, it was an impressive showing from North Carolina’s Heisman hopeful signal caller.

Drake Maye on Chip Lindsey
Drake Maye was a full participant for the majority of North Carolina’s spring game, not because he needed to polish his game so much as he needed opportunities to get in sync with his new receivers in game-like scenarios. Also, the team is working on learning the new plays and schemes brought in by their new offensive coordinator, Chip Lindsey.
“Coach Lindsey has been great. He’s coaching me hard, coaching all of us hard. He’s doing a nice job of not bringing only his stuff that only he’s he knows before. We got a lot of stuff last year that we’re rolling into this year; the same terminology that’s making it easy on the guys and easy on me. And it’s been fun to kind of see what he brings in and see what we are keeping. I feel we got a good thing going.”
North Carolina will have to wait until the fall to get an opportunity to go up against an opponent other than themselves.
Maye and the Tar Heels will have a huge test at the start of the year as they will take on their rivals in the South, South Carolina. If Saturday’s spring game is any indication of what made and the Tar Heels offense will look like this season, it’s sure to be another huge year for UNC.
