Drake Maye, UNC trying to put Virginia loss behind them
Going into a home game against the Virginia Cavaliers, the North Carolina Tar Heels were unbeaten. However, the Tar Heels didn’t leave with that perfect record intact, as the Hoos managed to pull off a major upset.
Now, North Carolina needs to get ready to move on with its season and as star quarterback Drake Maye explained, that means putting the loss behind them and not letting it hang with them into the next week.
“Just trying to put that one behind us, that’s the big thing,” Drake Maye said. “Just put it behind us. Get back because we still have a lot to play for. Kind of learned from it.”
North Carolina had its chances to win a game that Drake Maye admitted the Tar Heels expected to win. That included a drive in the final minute of the game that got to the Virginia side of the 50-yard line before Maye threw a game-sealing interception.
“Obviously, we’re just disappointed. Not the way we wanted that one to go, especially in a home game with an opponent we felt like we were better than, but at the same time, gotta learn from it. Get back after it and don’t let that one filter into this week.”
Next week, North Carolina will play on the road against Georgia Tech. That’s a game that head coach Mack Brown is going into with concerns about.

“Georgia Tech is a game that’s been tough for us, we’ve lost two out of three since I’ve been here,” Brown said. “We didn’t win at Bobby-Dodd Stadium our first year here. But in Atlanta, Atlanta hadn’t been good to the Tar Heels, we’ve lost 10 of 12. Here me now, we’ve lost 10 of the last 12 games in Atlanta to Georgia Tech.”
Mack Brown claims lack of student turnout hurt North Carolina against Virginia
Following the loss to Virginia, Mack Brown put some of the blame on not enough students coming to the game.
“If you’re a fan that’s frustrated because we lost the game, go help. Get to Atlanta this weekend and help us if you really care. There’s a difference in yelling and carrying,” Brown said.
“So, with fall break, if you couldn’t make it to the game Saturday, maybe you should have. Maybe you could have helped us a little bit. Think about how important it really is to you, not just how much you yell after a win or how much you stick your chest out. You can help, and you have helped us. It hurt us that our students were not there Saturday.”
