Four-star point guard Elliot Cadeau announced on Tuesday that he would be re-classifying into the 2023 class. As a result, the Branson (MO) Link Academy product must be moved into the 2023 rankings.

Cadeau now slots into the final 2023 On3 150 at No. 15 and the No. 2 overall point guard in the class.

Re-ranking a prospect into an older cycle can be a difficult task. It requires us to look at the prospect through a different lens and against a different group of peers. Entering college as a freshman in what should be a player’s senior year of high school can change things.

Cadeau brings leadership to UNC

Elliot Cadeau brings leadership and court vision to the Tar Heels. He should immediately battle for the starting guard spot opposite RJ Davis.

The point guard is listed at 6-foot-2 and 165 pounds. He has a sturdy frame with burst and quick twitch. Cadeau has been a proven winner among the prep ranks. He led his Link Academy team to a 27-1 record this season and a Geico National Championship. Through 17 games on Nike’s EYBL Circuit this Spring, Cadeau’s New Heights Lightning team is 13-4, second place in their division.

The Tar Heel averaged 21.3 points during last year’s FIBA European Championships with Sweden. The quickness is intriguing, as an on ball defender and a paint touch lead guard. However, where Cadeau shines is with his ability to see the floor.

Cadeau has always had tools and has played at a high level. Although his growth over the last three months has been immense. Cadeau is currently leading the EYBL with 9.3 assists, dishing out a 2.3 assist-to-turnover ratio. His ability to create passing lanes using angles and pace has been unparalleled this summer. He has played aggressively in transition and with great pace in the half-court.

In the past, basketball players classifying up has come with mixed results. The last player who enrolled early at UNC was Will Shaver. Cadeau’s re-classification may not be as extreme as others. Cadeau will be turning 19 in September of this year, which makes him the age of many college freshmen. For comparison, the No. 1 point guard in the 2023 class, Isaiah Collier, will turn 19 a month after Cadeau this year.

Cadeau is the third player in UNC’s 2023 class joining four-star C Zayden High (AZ Compass/AZ) and four-star SG Simeon Wilcher (Roselle Catholic/NJ). The Tar Heels have the No. 8 ranking in the 2023 On3 Team Rankings. They have also added four players through the transfer portal, Brown wing Paxson Wojcik, Notre Dame shooting guard Cormac Ryan, Louisville forward Jae’Lyn Withers, and Stanford forward Harrison Ingram.
