North Carolina‘s dominant 80-59 win over Louisville featured a career performance from sophomore guard D’Marco Dunn. Dunn finished the day with a career-high 14 points, scoring in a variety of ways and also contributing on the defensive end of the floor. Dunn has been labeled as more of a strictly shooting threat, but head coach Hubert Davis spoke to the versatile of his offensive ability.

“I’m unfamiliar with the label that he had, I just know that he’s a guy that can shoot the ball from the outside, he can make shots. He also has the ability to attack the basket, he’s athletic enough to finish strong, he can handle the basketball,” Davis said. “And so you’ve got another ball handler out there on the floor that can help and relieve pressure in case you’re pressed or need someone else to initiate offense.”

Dunn did burry two three-pointers in Saturday’s contest, but also had a successful night scoring around the basket, only missing two of his shot attempts and making all of his free throws. He was one of five Tar Heels to score in double figures, but also made a big impact on defense as well with five rebounds, a block, and two steals in the game.

“And then defensively he’s got really good feet, so he’s a really good on-ball defender, very athletic, good hands, and in the last game against Louisville he attacked the offensive glass,” Davis said.

Following a freshman season where Dunn averaged four minutes and one point a game, his role has increased this year averaging 12.9 minutes and 4.1 points per game. He’s played in 20-plus minutes for North Carolina’s last two games, becoming an option off of the bench that Davis can rely on as long as he continues to be effective in one specific area of his game.

“So as I said before, the number one thing with D’Marco is getting it to gear five and keeping it in gear five, and when he does that he’s a really special players and I was really proud of the way that he played against Louisville and he’s just getting better and better throughout the season,” Davis concluded.

It will definitely be interesting to see how Dunn’s role evolves as the season prolongs, as the Tar Heels face Boston College on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. ET in their next matchup.
