All seemed lost for Hubert Davis and the North Carolina Tar Heels after a 20-point loss to the Clemson Tigers dropped their record to 14-11 on Feb. 10.

However, you can never count out a team led by Davis, and that’s never been more true than over the last couple of weeks. North Carolina has bounced back in a big way, winning their last four games, the latest of which being an 11-point road win over the Florida State Seminoles

After moving their record to 18-11 and improving their resume for the NCAA Tournament, Davis took some time to speak with the media about his team’s turnaround, and what’s changed for UNC over the second half of February.

“Let me say this, I’ve said before — in terms of chemistry, it has been a 10 out of 10 the whole time. What I have seen is a change in some areas,” Davis said, regarding what’s been different over this run for North Carolina. “One is offensive rebounding, but I’ve seen a change in like, the voices. In shoot-around, practice, huddles, locker room. The noise is getting louder. There’s more talking. I’ve noticed that, and that’s something that maybe wasn’t there consistently at the beginning of the year, but it is right now.

“… We’ve come a long way. There’s a lot more room for improvement. I don’t think we’re anywhere close to where we could be, and I’ve told them that, but the response after we lost to Clemson has been really good. You know, after we lost on the Monday, the Saturday, Monday game, and we had that week just to practice on us, and it’s just really helped us. Going into Syracuse, and able to win there on the road, and win two games at home against great opponents, and then coming here.

“I just — the thing right now that I’m most proud of is this group has stayed the course, and they’ve stayed connected, when very easily they could not have. That’s a testament to them, to be able to stay the course and stay that stay connected when things weren’t going so well, to get us to now where we’re playing better.”

All told, it’s easy to see North Carolina is on the right track, and that’s a good spot for them to be with only three games remaining in the regular season. Their next contest will come on Saturday afternoon, when they open March up with a clash against the Miami Hurricanes in Chapel Hill.

Hubert Davis has the Tar Heels humming, and we’ve seen them make runs after being counted out before. We’ll see if they can finish out the season strong, and use their momentum to make a run in the ACC Tournament, with March Madness to follow.
