Hubert Davis lights into team for toughness, energy vs Michigan State

Saturday’s game against Michigan State has not started how Hubert Davis wanted to. North Carolina is already playing from behind and down double digits before the under-12 media timeout. While it’s not a typical Round of 32 nine-seed the Tar Heels are playing, Davis still expects better.
He is not too happy about the performance either. Before CBS’ Allie LaForce could finish her question about the start, Davis began to light into his team. The required energy and toughness has not been there in his eyes, especially when it comes to guarding Malik Hall down in the post.
North Carolina will have to make some kind of change. Davis is hoping a likely fiery timeout can get them going.
“They’re tougher,” Davis said. “They’re tougher. They’re catching the ball right underneath the basket. Until we meet the fight, that’s when things will turn around.”
The physical battle down low began right away, with Armando Bacot being called for an offensive foul in the post. North Carolina has not responded well to anything Michigan State has thrown at them thus far and Davis is already throwing some urgency their way.

Bacot has been the pride and joy of North Carolina’s team over the last three seasons, being a huge reason for their success. Him and Harrison Ingram have been great in the frontcourt for the Tar Heels. Hopefully, a slow start does not phase the two veteran players.
Tom Izzo is more than experienced this time of year, clearly having his team ready to play. Plenty of basketball to play but UNC is certainly in a danger zone at the current moment. Michigan State will want to capitalize on the early run in Charlotte.
North Carolina-Michigan State is not the matchup you would expect in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Both are distinguished programs expecting to compete for national championships after having successful regular seasons. These brands scream more of Elite Eight, Final Four, or even the national championship game.
Unfortunately, the Tar Heels will have to get through one of the sport’s blue bloods in order to get through to the second weekend. Some fire was always going to be needed to get a win and it’s coming early from Davis.
