Hubert Davis on UNC's struggles: 'We've been consistently inconsistent'

North Carolina is usually one of the stronger teams in the nation each season, but Hubert Davis has been disappointed with his Tar Heels thus far throughout the 2024-2025 campaign, as they currently sit at 13-10 after losing four of their previous five showdowns.

Following their latest loss this weekend at Duke, Davis believes there’s only one thing UNC has been consistent at this season, and that’s being inconsistent. He’s not giving up hope on the crusade yet, but it’s evident North Carolina has a bevy of areas to improve upon before they can get fans to buy back into what they’re selling.

“This is what our team has been. You know, we’ve been consistently inconsistent, in the details on both ends of the floor,” Davis told the media, regarding his Tar Heels. “That’s what we’ve been. I’ve been clear and direct, in regard to the little things that, you know — that I’m talking about. It’s, you know, shot selection, turnovers. The last two games, teams have scored 41 points off of our turnovers. That’s just — that’s just not going to work. That’s just not sustainable.

“You know, defensively, you know, defending without fouling, boxing out. Those are things that — those are things that can be fixed, and those are things that we’ve talked about. Those are things that we have to fix moving forward.”

Regardless, the Tar Heels have themselves in a bad spot, with their stretch of play in the ACC. They already didn’t do much in the non-conference, with a 7-5 mark and losses to all but one of the quality opponents they played. Now, over the last month, they’re at 6-5 in league play due to this recent skid at 1-4, with the lone victory requiring overtime at home.

Davis isn’t losing hope though. He added that UNC still has at least ten to fourteen opportunities, pending their seeding in the conference tournament, to determine what they can do, no matter where they are right now.

“I do communicate with the team on, you know, regardless of where we are now and people’s opinions, this team still has a chance to achieve and experience everything that this team wants to achieve and experience,” added the Tar Heels leader. “We have nine more regular season games left – we have that. We have the ACC Tournament. So, like – and it’s all under our control in terms of us playing the best that we can be.”

It’ll be fascinating to see if Hubert Davis can get North Carolina’s season turned around, but the Tar Heels can’t waste anymore time. They don’t play again until a home game against Pittsburgh on Saturday afternoon. Perhaps that can be the start of their claw back to the top.
