North Carolina fans love their basketball team, this is no secret. It’s also no secret that it can be hard to get fans of any school packed in and excited for early season mismatches. Head coach Hubert Davis did not find there to be any such issue on Monday night.

The Tar Heels in front of a packed crowd in Carolina blue at the Dean Dome en route to a 69-56 win over UNC-Wilmington. Davis couldn’t help but laud the fans in the stands.

“It was amazing,” Davis said of the atmosphere. “When I walked out of the tunnel, the energy was live. It was really unbelievable. So, just the support and the buzz around this team has been off the chart. So thankful for the fans and their support. Not only tonight but all last year.”

Davis also specifically cited the student section as being a boost. He also acknowledged that getting a crowd like that late on a Monday is no small feat, either. He knows that when UNC is there to play basketball, the fans will be there, too.

“I want to send a specific and special shoutout to the student body,” Davis said. “All students — they sold out all of their seats. And it makes a difference. It made a difference for us at home last year. It made a difference for us tonight. When we have that type of support whether it’s Monday night at nine o’clock or a Friday night at seven — it doesn’t matter.”

And with the standard ACC home slate challenging the Tar Heels — Duke and Virginia enter the season ranked, as does UNC — Davis will be happy to have the home court advantage.

“Having that type of support from our fans and specifically from our student body is something that helps us out there on the floor and I’m just very, very thankful for,” Davis said.
