Hubert Davis says RJ Davis is playing at an All-American level
North Carolina has finally found its rhythm following the late-year skid over the holidays. Winning 10 of its 12 games, guard RJ Davis has been one of the leading factors in the Tar Heels’ recent success.
After defeating NC State 80-69 over the weekend, UNC head coach Hubert Davis raved about RJ Davis, saying his star guard deserves some credit for his efforts when the season comes to a close.
“He’s playing at an extremely high level. I talked about at the beginning of the year — and he didn’t mention he was dealing with a finger injury on his shooting hand — that affected him in terms of being able to shoot the ball percentage-wise, but we all felt like he could shoot,” Hubert Davis said postgame. “But over the last month and a half, he’s played at an All-American level.”
Davis finished the outing against NC State with a season-high 26 points, including a flawless 14-14 from the free throw line, and four rebounds during the victory. Still, Hubert Davis wasn’t praising his star guard’s offense after the game.

“Despite his ability to score, distribute — the thing I was most impressed about was his defense,” the UNC coach said. “Every time, he picked up full-court. … I thought the pressure of RJ really helped our defense in terms of being aggressive. He made them run their offense out a little more than they do during shoot-around. It was an all-around game and I thought RJ was fantastic.”
He followed that performance up with a less impressive nine points, but had another ‘all-around’ game with five assists, five rebounds and two steals and making his mark on the game once again. That came against Syracuse on the road and Tuesday night and came home with a tough 72-68 victory in the outing.
North Carolina has a week-long break before jumping right back into ACC play against Pitt at home on Feb. 1 where they’ll be looking to secure their fifth-straight victory. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET live on the ACC Network.
