Hubert Davis shares UNC's mindset with sole possession of ACC
Saturday’s results went in North Carolina’s favor as the Tar Heels have reclaimed sole possession of the top spot in the ACC. There’s still four games to go in the regular season, though, and Hubert Davis doesn’t want his team to forget that fact.
Davis spoke about regaining the league’s No. 1 seed for themselves following the 54-44 win for UNC over Virginia this weekend. He said it has essentially no impact on the team at the moment considering all things.
“No. Not at all,” Davis said in his postgame press conference.
Davis didn’t want to take away from his team’s success in Charlottesville. It’s place where the program hadn’t won a game since 2012 after losing eight straight times. However, on a two-day turnaround where they’ll play again tonight, he just doesn’t want them getting ahead of themselves.
“I told them to celebrate this win. Winning is hard and I want them to enjoy this moment,” said Davis. “I said as soon as we get back to the Smith Center, the bus goes right into the tunnel? Now we focus on our preparation for a really good Miami team on Monday.”
North Carolina won by 10 over the Cavaliers to keep Virginia at No. 3 in the ACC. They also benefitted from the chaos that took place in Winston-Salem. Duke, the No. 2 seed now, lost at Wake Forest, the No. 4 seed in the conference, by four points.
That all gave the Tar Heels a one-game lead over over the Blue Devils. It also gave them a 2.5-game margin over Virginia and a three-game edge over the Demon Deacons. That has them in the driver’s seat in the ACC, albeit with four matchups left including a season-finale with Duke in Durham.
Davis is surely glad for his team’s position as they come into the final two weeks of the regular season. It’s just that, simply put, their job isn’t done yet. That’s why North Carolina is going to continue to approach their games like this until it is.

“Something that we’ve said throughout the entire year is there’s more to be said and more to be done,” said Davis. “We just have that type of mindset.”
Nijel Pack to miss Monday’s matchup against North Carolina
As Miami looks for a huge win to get their season back on track against North Carolina on Monday, they’re going to be missing one of their best players once again.
When the Hurricanes take the floor, G Nijel Pack won’t be with them. Jim Larrañaga revealed that he’ll be missing another game on Monday.
“Miami’s Nijel Pack (lower body) is OUT for tonight’s game against North Carolina, per Jim Larrañaga,” CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein posted on X. “Averages 13.7 PPG. Has not played since 2/14.”
We’ll see if Miami can end their skid without their star but it’ll certainly be a tall order.
