After his team’s huge win on the road against Duke, North Carolina head coach Hubert Davis commented on the Tar Heels being judged by “quadrant” wins. The first-year head coach of the Tar Heels expressed that he doesn’t understand how wins can change in value throughout the year, while his team is only focused on winning games and the upcoming postseason.

After being asked about the upcoming NCAA tournament and the criticisms about North Carolina’s lack of “quality” wins, Davis got a little bit defensive about the notion that his team’s record should speak for itself.

“Who said that,” joked Davis. “I can name a number of quality wins. I don’t think, very few people can win at Georgia Tech — not many people can have a winning record on the road in the ACC. I don’t know what a ‘quad’ is. I’m not a ‘quadrant’. I do know this and it doesn’t make any sense to me — how can a good win become a bad win or a bad loss become a great loss? I don’t understand that at all. I know we’re 23-8. I know we’ve won 11 out of the last 13. I know that we have a double bye in the ACC Tournament, we’re the three-seed. And I know that nobody even thought that we had a chance of winning today.

“I’m sorry, it wasn’t your question — I was just ready to give that answer. I apologize, you just happened to be the one, I apologize,” laughed Davis as he apologized for criticizing the question.

While nobody may have believed in the Tar Heels’ ability to play spoiler on Saturday night against their biggest rival, they showed tremendous resilience in the first half in front of a raucous crowd. By cutting the Blue Devils’ lead at the end of the first half down to 41-39, it opened up a second half performance carried by strong defense. North Carolina ended up winning by 13 on Duke’s home court on the biggest night of the season for them — the night honoring Mike Krzyzewski’s 42 year coaching career.
