North Carolina head coach Mack Brown made big changes to his coaching staff after the departure of Stacy Searels, who took the same role at Georgia, leading the Tar Heels to add offensive line coach Jack Bicknell from Louisville. Among other moves, the new addition brings a fresh emphasis to the offense.

During an offseason press conference, Mack Brown answered a question about the differences between Stacy Searels and Jack Bicknell.

“We’re so lucky to get one of the most experienced line coaches in the country,” said Brown. “We’ve got two coaches on our staff with NFL experience as coaches. … We’ve got to use that knowledge to win games here but also go to the next level. … He knows how to win college games, but he sure knows how to win at the NFL level. … The offense isn’t going to change, except the tweaks that we’ve made. And those are things that we’ll continue to work on that we has worked on for the last month. But normally, like I said… I don’t want kids sitting around worried about who’s my coach and is he going to like me and are we going to change anything. So being here for spring practice was critical.

“It was tough for Stacy leaving me the day before practice. It was tough, Jack leaving a guy he really admires and likes in coach Satterfield the day after the first practice. So I think the biggest thing is, these guys need a new boss. He needs a new team. … Jack will have different style than our previous coach, I watched it on Saturday some. And we’ve got some things that we need to fix and he’s very aware of those because he and Phil (Longo) talk all the time.”

Mack Brown on staff additions

The North Carolina Tar Heels are going to look very different on the field next season. A year after losing multiple offensive playmakers, UNC will now lose quarterback Sam Howell. But UNC’s changes extend further than just on the field, as Mack Brown has made multiple changes to his coaching staff.

“You always want to hire guys that have won,” Brown said on filling UNC’s staff with championship pedigree. “You always want to hire guys that believe in what you believe in. I love Jack (Bicknell)’s dad – Coach Bickell Sr. I mean he was one of those guys that I always looked up to at a young age. But coach Bicknell Sr. was one of the nicest, most generous, most giving guys that all of us looked up to.”
