North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye has had a successful beginning to his time as a starter in college football. He has helped the Tar Heels to a pair of great wins to open the season. UNC head coach Mack Brown says he has been happy to see the performances thus far from his new starting QB.

Brown joined College Football Countdown on ESPN Monday night and talked about the redshirt freshman. He said he is an incredibly mature prospect who has all the skills and intangibles you look for.

“He’s experienced and poised beyond his years. He plays his first game at home and throws five touchdowns. Then he goes on the road in a tough environment and he never changes who he is,” said Brown. “He’s 6’5, he’s 220, he can run, he’s very accurate, he’s a decision maker.”

Maye has been incredibly efficient overall in his pair of starts. He has completed 72.6% of his passes for 646 yards. Maye has also thrown nine touchdowns with no picks to this point.

Brown says it reminds him a lot of one of his quarterbacks at Texas in Colt McCoy. He says their accuracy with the football is nearly identical to each other.

“The biggest thing is he’s a good decision maker and he’s very accurate,” said Brown. “It reminds me a lot of Colt McCoy. Colt was so accurate in practice that the ball never hit the ground and it’s very, very similar with Drake.”

It has been so far, so good for Maye under center in Chapel Hill. While the UNC defense has struggled, he has put enough points on the board each game to help his team escape. With the schedule only getting harder from here, Mack Brown will need Maye to keep up this level of play. If he can, he’ll keep the Tar Heel’s offense near the top of the nation like they currently are.
