The North Carolina Tar Heels barely survived on Saturday afternoon against the Appalachian State Mountaineers in a classic, 63-61. It looks like a basketball score, but do not let your eyes deceive you. Both offenses lit up the scoreboard in historic fashion on Saturday afternoon in Boone, North Carolina. UNC head coach Mack Brown was relieved his team could come away with the heart-stopping victory and he decided to dance in the locker room following the win.

North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye was once again flawless on Saturday, showing that he’s one of the nation’s best at his position. Without an incredible performance from him and some key misses on two-point conversions from the Mountaineers, Brown might have been singing a different tune.

Maye threw for 372 passing yards and had 74 rushing yards to go along with five touchdowns. His skill set combined with the ‘Heels heavy artillery at receiver and running back, is almost impossible to defend. The Tar Heels’ offense will likely be bailing out their defense for much of the season, so they’ll need all the points their offense can give them.

The two teams combined for 62 points and 504 yards in the fourth quarter. That’s one point shy of the most points ever scored in the fourth quarter of an FBS game (Navy vs. North Texas in 2007). North Carolina’s duo of true freshmen running backs combined for just over 50 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the afternoon. The ‘Heels sophomore running back Caleb Hood rushed six times for 87 yards, with his longest run being a 71-yarder. North Carolina’s superstar wide receiver Josh Downs was in street clothes for the game, after he was dealing with a lower body injury, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
