Coaches intermingle more than most people realize. Assistants often move from one team to another as they work their way up the coaching ladder. Meanwhile, a losing record could force you to scramble for a new job. Because of this, coaches know each other well, especially ones who have been doing it as long as North Carolina coach Mack Brown has been.

During a press conference, Mack Brown was asked if he had a relationship with Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman.

“No, I really don’t,” Mack Brown said. “I’ve admired him and they did such a tremendous job at Cincinnati before he went to Notre Dame, and he’s got a great future ahead of him.”

“But I don’t know really well. I spoke to him before the game last year. I’ve known Brian Kelly forever and we coached together in some All-Star games, but I do not know Marcus very well,” Mack Brown reiterated.

The game between Notre Dame and North Carolina from 2021 that Mack Brown referred to came in South Bend. The Irish won 44-34. During his second stint at North Carolina, Brown is 0-2 against Notre Dame. Brian Kelly was Notre Dame’s head coach for both of those games.

Notre Dame will play North Carolina in Chapel Hill on Saturday, September 24th. Marcus Freeman comes into the game after getting his first win as a head coach, beating Cal 24-17.

Mack Brown announced Don Chapman’s return

North Carolina’s defense has been much maligned through three games. It’s a problem that Mack Brown knows he needs to address. However, Don Chapman, a veteran defensive back, returning will help the team.

“Don Chapman will remain on the team,” Mack Brown said. “He never left the team, but he did not travel to Georgia State.”

“And, with the information that we’ve gathered over two weeks, we feel like that he should stay on the team, and he will play this weekend. If some other information comes up, obviously, that is different than what we’ve learned, then we would look at it closely and see if that changed the narrative.”
