Mack Brown on Duke's Mayo Bowl: 'I'd love to have mayonnaise in my hair'
North Carolina will suit up on Wednesday and take on West Virginia in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl and Tar Heels coach Mack Brown has one simple wish.
“I’d love to have mayonnaise in my hair,” Brown said on Tuesday.
Sound a little weird? Well, it is. But that’s the goal when you’re one of the teams competing in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.
Every year the winning team’s coach is subjected to a mayo bath following the contest. However nasty it may be, it means your team has come out victorious.
“They want to do that, that’s kind of fun afterwards,” Brown said. “That would be just a tribute to winning. So I’m not worried about that at all. I can wash my hair. I can wash my hair a lot better than I can clean up after a loss.”
North Carolina will be playing without a handful of its stars, including quarterback Drake Maye (opted out) and receiver Kobe Paysour (injury). But star running back Omarion Hampton is expected to suit up, so that should help.

The rest of the production will have to be made up by new players in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.
“I think they’re ready to play. We’ve called it the New Opportunity Bowl,” Brown said. “And we’ve told our guys we need to maximize those opportunities. It’s hard to get an opportunity to play. Some of these guys have been wanting to play, and we’ve got 12 starters, I think, from the first of the year that won’t be in the game tomorrow night, so it’ll be a lot of new guys.”
At 8-4 on the season, North Carolina has a chance to end its season on a winning note after losing four of its final six contests. That’s nothing to sleep on.
Then, of course, there’s the fun of players getting to see their coach dunked in mayo of they win. Brown has been on the wrong side of this bowl game before, so he’s looking forward to a gooey bath after this one.
“Two years ago I really wanted to and we got beat. We didn’t play very well,” Brown said. “So I think the fact that people like Duke’s Mayo sponsor bowl games to give these families and kids so much extra is really special. And you have to thank them.”
The Duke’s Mayo Bowl will begin at 5:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday, with a broadcast slated for ESPN.
