Mack Brown recalls hilarious jab from wife during bye week Saturday
There are no days off for UNC head coach Mack Brown. Although he had a bye week last week, the 71-year-old said he spent all day Saturday watching the Tar Heels’ future opponents playing games all across the country. He took copious notes on Saturday, but not many steps, as his wife, Sally, pointed out.
Brown recounted the hilarious tale to reporters on Monday when asked what he did on gameday.
“I started at 11 with Wofford and Virginia Tech, and I finished at midnight,” Brown said. “Sally was really rude to me because on Saturday, I looked at my watch once and I went, ‘My gosh, it’s 3 o’clock and I’m trying to get 10,000 steps, I’ve got 1,600 steps,’ and she said, ‘I don’t believe that because you haven’t gotten off the couch.’
“I thought that was really rude. I said, ‘I’ve gone to the restroom twice, I got lunch,’ she said, ‘No, you didn’t, I brought you lunch.’ It was bad, but it was facts.”

Brown: Beating Notre Dame could take program from ‘good’ to ‘great’
Mack Brown is getting his team ready for a showdown for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Saturday. The Tar Heels have an unblemished record on the line and a win over Marcus Freeman’s squad could give the program serious momentum heading into ACC play.

Brown discussed the importance of the matchup at his press conference on Wednesday.
“We’ve been a good team,” Brown said. “We won seven the first year and that’s so much better than two. Then we won eight and go to the Orange Bowl for the first time in our school history, then last year, we were mad at six. Three years ago, that would’ve been two or three times as many games as we won.
“We’ve been a good program, and what we have to do, in my opinion, is beat someone like Notre Dame to become a great program… When you look at what they’ve done, we haven’t beaten them very often and people in this league haven’t beaten them very often. So, it’s a great challenge for us.”
Despite playing host on Saturday, the Tar Heels are the underdog. Vegas has the line at -2 for the Irish and ESPN’s matchup predictor gives Notre Dame a 53.5% chance to win.
