The 2022 season is rapidly approaching, but UNC head football coach Mack Brown isn’t done adding to the Tar Heels coaching staff just yet. According to a report from Football Scoop’s Zach Barnett, UNC is adding Frank Wilson Jr to its staff as a senior special teams analyst.

“Frank Wilson, Jr., is expected to join North Carolina’s staff as a senior special teams analyst, sources told FootballScoop on Monday,” Barnett wrote.

Last season, Wilson served as a senior special teams assistant at Houston. He previously worked with Old Dominion’s special teams unit, and was hired in February of 2022 as the special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach at McNeese.

Many view Wilson as a rising star in the coaching ranks. Now, he will be at his biggest destination yet as part of a UNC staff that has a few new faces.

Last season, UNC went 6-7 overall after falling to South Carolina in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. The Tar Heels are hoping for a step back in the right direction in 2022.

Wilson is the latest new face on UNC’s staff

As Brown looks to turn the corner and take the next step back into contention, he knows that it’s going to take a unified effort from his coaching staff. With Wilson now reportedly part of UNC’s staff, Brown hopes that the pieces are in place to lead the Tar Heels to the next level.

“We have a few coaches that come in with Gene Chizik and Charlton Warren, who were here in 2015 and ’16 and did an amazing job,” Brown said.

“I like our staff right now. I like the continuity. Our players understand that we put our thumb on them. Our bench is our best friend. And we had a lot of great competition this spring. I can’t wait until fall.”

After UNC failed to live up to the lofty preseason expectations last year, Brown knows that he’s entering this season with a chip on his shoulder.

“I absolutely see a chip on our shoulder that we’ve created,” started Brown. “We had it the first two years. We lost it last year. For whatever reason we sat there, and I could feel it, but we couldn’t do anything about it.”
