College baseball is continuing to grow in popularity, with a record number of people tuning in for the NCAA Baseball Tournament regionals last weekend.

“It’s awesome,” Scott Forbes said. “You know, I grew up obviously loving sports. I loved at the time the big three – football, basketball and baseball. Loved watching baseball, loved watching football, loved watching basketball. But college baseball, just in front of my own eyes, to see its growth has been unbelievable.”

The Chapel Hill Regional in particular attracted plenty of viewers last weekend.

The two games involving North Carolina and LSU are the two most-watched regional games on record, according to ESPN.

The first game between the two teams averaged 756,000 viewers, while the Chapel Hill Regional championship game averaged 964,000 viewers. There were also spirited crowds in Chapel Hill all weekend.

“To see the growth here has been unbelievable. A lot of that is having good kids that fans want to come see, but to see the viewership. … I got a bunch of texts from family members that said, ‘Man, y’all were breaking records.’ I read the tweet and thought, ‘Wow, that’s phenomenal for college baseball,'” Scott Forbes said. “I think it’s going to continue to grow. It’s an awesome sport. It’s one of the bigger events, if you are fortunate enough to make it to the College World Series. So I thought that was cool.”

Scott Forbes shares what he tells his players being so close to College World Series berth

Looking for its first College World Series appearance since the 2018 season, North Carolina sits just two wins away from Omaha. And coach Scott Forbes and the Tar Heels are getting back to the basics before the Chapel Hill Super Regional.

Forbes has pleaded with his team not to get ahead of itself, not to get too content with being in a Super Regional or even potentially winning that Super Regional.

“We actually talked about that on Tuesday when we met,” Scott Forbes said. “And I asked the guys what’s the first thing, what was our goal in our first team meeting?’ Connor Bovair is sitting right there and said, ‘To win a national championship.’ I said, ‘OK, so our goal is not to get to Omaha for a vacation or a party. Our goal is to win a national championship.’ We got that out of the way at our first meeting.”
