North Carolina forward Cade Tyson enters NCAA Transfer Portal

North Carolina forward Cade Tyson has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal, per On3’s Pete Nakos. He transferred to UNC last offseason after spending his first two collegiate seasons at Belmont.
Tyson made 31 appearances for the Tar Heels this season but never started. He averaged 2.6 points and 1.1 rebounds in 7.9 minutes per game. He shot 40.3% from the field and 29.2% from beyond the arc.
Tyson had his best performance of the season in North Carolina’s 93-67 blowout win over La Salle on Dec. 14. In the victory, Tyson erupted for a season-high 23 points and five rebounds while shooting 9-14 from the floor.
North Carolina fans expected Tyson to play a much larger role for the team this season than he did. In his sophomore season at Belmont in 2023-24, the 6-foot-7 standout averaged 16.2 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. He shot 49.3% from the field and a stunning 46.5% from downtown.
Tyson boasted the second-best 3-point percentage in the country in the 2023-24 season. For his efforts, he was named an All-Missouri Valley Conference Second-Team selection.
Tyson played high school basketball at Carmel Christian (NC), where he was an unranked prospect in the 2022 recruiting cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He averaged 24.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.9 steals per game during his senior year to Carmel Christian to the NCISAA 4A state championship.

Cade Tyson was the No. 28 overall player and No. 5 small forward in the transfer portal last offseason, according to On3’s 2024 Transfer Portal Player Rankings. Now, Tyson will look to draw interest again from some of the top programs in the country.
He is the fourth North Carolina player to enter the transfer portal this offseason. He is joined by Jalen Washington, Elliot Cadeau and Ian Jackson. All three of the players except Jackson have already committed to another school.
UNC finished this season with a 23-14 overall record and a 13-7 mark in conference play. In controversial fashion, the Tar Heels received an at-wide berth into the NCAA Tournament. They won their First Four game against San Diego State but fell in the Round of 64 against Ole Miss.
