Hubert Davis reacts to record-setting performances by Armando Bacot
North Carolina‘s 72-64 win over Boston College Tuesday night was a historic night for Tar Heels’ center Armando Bacot, who finished the night with 20 points and 16 rebounds. Bacot’s double-double was the 60th of his career, tying Tar Heels Billy Cunningham for the school record. But his 20 points also passed former UNC player and current head coach Hubert Davis on the all-time school scoring list, which Davis reacted to after the game.
“Coming from coach Smith and coach Guthridge where they took out the team stats out of the Daily Tar Heel and we weren’t allowed to have stat sheets in the locker room, I just was always taught that stats don’t mean anything and it continued all the way throughout the NBA,” Davis explained. “The only time that I ever looked at a stat sheet, occasionally, was to look at how many threes I took. I didn’t want to take more than 50% unless I was hot, so I just wanted to have a diversity in terms of shots that I want.”
It’s clear that the coaching principles and mentality of Dean Smith and Bill Guthridge resonated with Davis throughout his career. But Bacot’s dominance and production during his four years with the Tar Heels is hard to ignore, whether you’re looking in the record books or if you’ve watched with your own two eyes.
“So I think that’s great that Armando’s moving up in rebounds and points, and as a coach you want your players to be better than you, I mean that’s awesome. So I don’t put a lot of stock in stats and positions of points scored, the biggest impact Armando is making is the impact he’s making on the floor and also the impact that he’s making that he’s been here for four years,” Davis said.

Davis elaborated on how Bacot’s numbers are special, but his dedication to the program and what he means to North Carolina far outweigh any statistics.
“I think he’s somebody that easily could have left and tried and gone to the NBA, but because of his love and his passion for this place, and for this community, and for this university he’s wanted to be here and stay here,” Davis said. “And that’s the thing that sticks out to me that’s great, I know the stats are awesome, but his commitment to this university and this program to me that’s what stands out.”
Bacot’s record-breaking career and legacy will continue this season, as he’s now one double-double away from securing the school record and only 17 rebounds away from passing Tyler Hansbrough‘s career rebounds record.
