Mack Brown describes the personality of this UNC team
North Carolina pulled off a last-second comeback win against rival Duke this weekend, beating the Blue Devils on the road 38-35. Their recent victory extends their winning streak to three games, all against ACC opponents, putting them in the driver’s seat of the coastal division and making them one of three teams currently undefeated in conference play along with Clemson and Syracuse. The Tar Heels also earned themselves a No. 22 ranking in the latest AP Poll following Saturday’s win, as head coach Mack Brown spoke on the personality of his squad.
“Right now they’re very confident and they’ve gone from a team that wasn’t very confident in that fourth quarter at Appalachian State defensively to one that that was very confident tonight,” Brown said.
The Tar Heels famously gave up 40 points in the fourth quarter of their week 1 matchup versus the Mountaineers but pulled out a narrow 63-61 victory, which they’ve masted this season, as their win over Duke was their third victory of three points or less this season.

“And I thought too they play hard, they just play hard and it’s really really tough when you give up big plays and you don’t handle things properly and you see a game slip away like it did tonight when we had a ten point-lead,” Brown said.
North Carolina found the end zone twice in the third quarter of their matchup with Duke, giving them the ten-point lead heading into the fourth quarter Brown was referring. But the Tar Heels quickly found themselves in the hole, after the Blue Devils scored on back to back offensive possessions in the fourth quarter and took a four-point lead of their own.

But UNC rallied, as freshman phenom quarterback Drake Maye orchestrated a nine-play, 74-yard drive, capped off by a go ahead eight-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Antoine Green with 16 seconds left in the ball game.
“It’s really hard to stop momentum, especially in a rival game, especially on the road, and they did all that, and that’s what makes me so proud of them,” Brown said.
Brown and his team have definitely opened some eyes across the country, and have proven to be tough competitors week in and week out. And if they’re as confident as Brown says, it’ll be intriguing to see how they close out the rest of their season with their eyes on the ACC championship game, hosted in their home state on December 4 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
