North Carolina Tar Heels linebacker Amare Campbell plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal, per On3’s Hayes Fawcett.

Amare Campbell has spent the last two seasons with the Tar Heels. During his time there, he played in 23 games. In that playing time, he made 86 total tackles, 13 tackles for a loss, and 7.5 sacks. He has also had an interception, two passes defended, and a forced fumble. The majority of that production came this past season, his sophomore campaign.

Amare Campbell played his high school football at Unity Reed in Virginia. He had been recruited by several power conference schools, including West Virginia, Duke, and Maryland. Coming out of high school, he was a three-star recruit in the Class of 2023, according to the On3 Industry Ranking. He was the 128th-ranked linebacker and the 1,292nd-ranked player overall in that recruiting cycle.

Over the last two seasons, North Carolina has gone 14-11. That includes a .500 regular season in 2024, which saw head coach Mack Brown relieved of his duties. To this point, the Tar Heels have not found their next head coach.

The lack of uncertainty at the head coaching spot is going to be a challenge for North Carolina to deal with moving forward. Until that new coaching staff is in place, players may look for a more stable situation while it’s going to be more challenging to add new players to the roster without the staff in place.

When a coaching change is made, the Transfer Portal opens for a 30-day window. That’s been a challenge for North Carolina. However, on Monday, December 9th, the portal opened to everyone for the Winter Transfer Window.

One interesting head coach who has been in discussions with North Carolina has been Bill Belichick. The legendary NFL head coach has been out of coaching since parting ways with the New England Patriots and appears to want to coach again. Now, conversations between him and the Tar Heels are reportedly ongoing.

Amid the Transfer Portal and head coaching search, North Carolina is also preparing for a bowl game. The Tar Heels are set to play UConn in the Fenway Bowl on December 28th.

Amare Campbell has two seasons of eligibility remaining in college.
