North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye has been one of the best quarterbacks in college football halfway through the 2022 campaign. On Saturday against the Miami Hurricanes, he made a throw that is likely to land him on SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays. Late in the second quarter, Maye was somehow able to throw a perfect spiral while being tackled by a Miami defender. The pass found the hands of his receiver Josh Downs, who took a few steps and dove into the end zone for the 15-yard touchdown.

The score put the Tar Heels up 21-7 with less than two minutes remaining in the half, but the ‘Canes would answer before halftime.

Both quarterbacks on Saturday have been putting on a show in the first half, with Tyer Van Dyke and Drake Maye both passing for over 250 yards in the first half. Coming into Saturday’s contest, Maye had put up such prolific numbers that he was even earning Heisman consideration from some members of the media. On3’s Mike Hugenin mentioned him as the No. 4 player on his Heisman Hot Board. Before Saturday’s game, Maye had tossed 19 touchdown passes this season. That mark was good enough to tie him with Mississippi State quarterback Will Rogers for first in the country.

Maye has thrown for five touchdown passes in two games this season, in the team’s loss against Notre Dame and in their 56-24 win over the Florida A&M Rattlers. He had a QBR of 90.6 coming into the Miami game, ranking him third in the country in that stat category. Maye is the younger brother of former North Carolina Tar Heel basketball star Luke Maye. His father, Mark Maye also played quarterback at UNC from 1983-1988.

The North Carolina Tar Heels currently lead Saturday’s game 24-17 midway through the third quarter. The game is being televised on ESPN2.
