North Carolina has signed head baseball coach Scott Forbes to five-year contract extension, the school announced Friday afternoon.

“Carolina Baseball continues to be in excellent hands under the leadership of Coach Scott Forbes,” Tar Heels athletic director Bubba Cunningham said in a statement. “He is dedicated not only to developing strong baseball players, but also to mentoring successful students who care about academics and giving back to the Carolina community. He is committed to winning at the highest level and cares deeply about the well-being of everyone around him. He leads our program in a first-class manner, and we are happy that he will remain our coach for years to come.”

Forbes was first hired as head coach after the 2020 season when long-time North Carolina manager Mike Fox retired. Forbes had played for Fox at North Carolina Wesleyan.

He joined Fox in Chapel Hill when Fox was first hired as head coach in 1999. Forbes left to coach at Winthrop as an assistant for three years before returning to North Carolina in 2006.

“Being the head coach at the University of North Carolina is a tremendous honor,” Forbes said. “Two of the foundational pillars of our program are thankfulness and servanthood — they ring particularly true for me today.

Heading into this weekend’s series against NC State, Forbes has a 101-66 record running the Tar Heels program.

The program made the NCAA Tournament in both of his first two years running the program, including making a run to a Super Regional last season.

“UNC baseball begins and ends with our student-athletes,” Forbes said in a statement. This program will always be about our players, they are why we do what we do. I am humbled by the opportunity to continue to serve them and hungry for what lies ahead. To the Tar Heel baseball diehards: You are such a huge part of our success, let’s keep packing the Bosh and continue moving Tar Heel Baseball forward together.”
