North Carolina entered the eighth inning tied with Notre Dame in the ACC Tournament on Saturday. Then, Mac Horvath came to the plate.
Horvath hit an RBI single to right field for a base hit, driving in a run to put the Tar Heels up 3-2. Then, Danny Serretti drove in two runs with a double to make it a 5-2 UNC lead. North Carolina added two more runs in the top of the ninth to come away with the 7-2 win over the Fighting Irish — and advance to the tournament championship.
But Horvath’s single was the biggest hit of the inning, and proved to be the winning run.
Mikey Madej had the biggest day at the plate for North Carolina, going a perfect 4-for-4 and scoring four runs on the afternoon. Shawn Rapp got the win after coming in in relief, throwing 1.2 innings and striking out one batter. Davis Palermo threw the last two innings of the game and got the save.
