North Carolina wide receiver Gavin Blackwell plans to enter NCAA Transfer Portal
North Carolina Tar Heels wide receiver Gavin Blackwell plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal, according to On3’s Hayes Fawcett.
During his three seasons in Chapel Hill, Blackwell totaled 31 receptions for 441 yards & one touchdown. Wherever he ends up in 2025, he’ll have one year of eligibility remaining.
Blackwell played high school football at Sun Valley (NC), where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 170 overall recruit in the 2021 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
As a recruit, Blackwell was courted by teams like Ohio State, LSU, Florida and Penn State. Perhaps there’ll be some renewed interest in the soon-to-be-former Tar Heels wide receiver in the portal.

More on the North Carolina Tar Heels
Of course, every transfer for North Carolina is a little more dramatic due to the hiring of Bill Belichick as the program’s next head coach.
Belichick is one of the most decorated coaches in all of football, but all of his success has come at an NFL level. Six Super Bowls are on the resume, all coming with the New England Patriots. Additionally, Belichick has been named NFL Coach of the Year on three occasions and a part of two NFL All-Decade teams (2000s and 2010s).
This is the first time Belichick has been anywhere but the NFL. His career began back in 1975 as a special assistant for the Baltimore Colts. Detroit, Denver, and New York (both teams) saw him serve as an assistant coach. Cleveland hired him to be the head coach in 1991 but the relationship only lasted through the 1995 season.
Moving forward, Bill Belichick will attempt to right the ship and bring UNC to national prominence. The journey will officially begin on Aug. 30 when TCU comes to Chapel Hill. Until then, Belichick has a staff and roster to put together ahead of the 2025 season.
