One of the most unexpected names on the coaching carousel so far came out on Wednesday with the report of Bill Belichick, the longtime coach of the New England Patriots, interviewing to become the next head coach at North Carolina. However, Paul Finebaum thinks it’s a great idea in college football.

Finebaum gave his opinion on Belichick, whether at UNC or in the NCAA, while on ‘Get Up’ on Friday. He says that he could see it working with a program like the Tar Heels’ with what they’d have available as an opportunity to Belichick.

“I could (see it),” Finebaum said. “Chapel Hill is a very unique situation. The expectations aren’t the same as Georgia, Texas, and Alabama. They have a great infrastructure.

“If they’re patient, I think he could turn that place around. Mack Brown almost got over the hump, just couldn’t quite. Bill Belichick could easily do that.”

Finebaum also believes Belichick would be a great option for other college teams too, including future openings in the SEC. With how much the collegiate level has changed to look like the professional one, he doesn’t think it would be too much of a difference for him in handling the jobs.

“I could because, right now, as you know – and you’ve got a former (general manager) sitting there. College football is very much like the NFL. You have a general manager who manages all the player personnel, the salaries, the NIL,” Finebaum explained. “Bill could be the coach and he could also, you know, make sure the infrastructure is set.”

Belichick has been available since January after the end of a tenure that lasted almost a quarter century in New England. He was 387-266 (.687) in coaching the Patriots since 2000, including six wins out of nine total trips to the Super Bowl.

Since then, Belichick has been rumored for other coaching gigs while also working in the media.

This would be quite the choice for Carolina for the Tar Heels’ next head coach. It’d be a great one to Finebaum, though, considering how he thinks that Belichick could work out.

“I think he would be a home run hire for North Carolina – or anyone, frankly, in this part of the country,” Finebaum stated.
