Former Penn State EDGE Joseph Mupoyi has committed to North Carolina via the NCAA Transfer Portal, per On3’s Pete Nakos. He entered the portal on Tuesday.

Mupoyi spent two seasons at Penn State but redshirted his true freshman season. In the 2024 campaign, Mupoyi made two appearances. Although he didn’t compile many statistics, he was named the coaching staff’s Developmental Squad Defensive Player of the Week twice.

Joseph Mupoyi played high school football at St. Thomas More (CT), where he was a four-star recruit. He was the No. 376 overall player and No. 38 EDGE in the 2023 recruiting cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Mupoyi is the 17th Penn State player to enter the transfer portal this offseason. To soften the blow of its losses, Penn State has added six players via the portal. The Nittany Lions are currently ranked No. 48 in On3’s 2025 Team Transfer Portal.

Penn State head coach James Franklin hasn’t been shy to criticize the current transfer portal rules. Franklin, like many other college football coaches, has grown tired of players participating in spring practices, only to enter the transfer portal during the spring window.

Instead, Franklin advocates for college football to have one transfer window in late spring. During an appearance on Andy & Ari On3 earlier this month, Franklin explained his stance.

“I think the conversations that I’ve heard in the Big Ten, the conversations that I’ve been apart of with the AFCA – the American Football Coaches Association – is I think everybody thinks the best model is to have one transfer portal (window) and have it after the Spring,” Franklin said. “That would allow everybody to get through their season. It’ll allow you to have one academic calendar.

“Then there’s been some talk about maybe moving Spring football more into the Summer, like (the NFL’s) OTA model. So now your roster is completely set and you can get some practices in leading up to training camp and start getting prepared. Because there are going to be a lot of programs that are going to be practicing a ton of guys during Spring ball who are not even going to be apart of their roster come the Fall.”
