Bill Belichick and staff reportedly have a directive for North Carolina social media to not share anything related to the New England Patriots. CBS Sports‘ Ross Martin reported as much because the UNC football program did not mention anything about former QB Drake Maye and his solid Sunday night performance for the New England Patriots.

“According to sources inside the UNC football program, it is a directive from the staff (Bill Belichick) to not tweet/retweet anything Patriots-related,” Martin wrote on Twitter/X. “That’s clearly why UNC football has not posted anything from Drake Maye’s electric primetime win over the Buffalo Bills.”

Maye led the Patriots to a win over the previously-undefeated Buffalo Bills on the road, 23-20. As Martin put it, Maye is a huge tool for North Carolina recruiting that Belichick and crew aren’t using.

“Drake Maye is UNC football’s best asset right now and a massive marketing, recruiting, and fundraising opportunity,” Martin wrote. “A top 5 QB in his second year and the future face of the NFL in a major market.”

Maye went 22-of-30 passing for 273 yards in Buffalo, leading a game-winning drive in the fourth quarter against the Bills. It was really the only semblance of offense for New England since TreVeyon Henderson had 24 rushing yards to lead the team.

Stefon Diggs had himself a day too, reeling in 10 catches for 146 yards. But despite Maye’s Sunday heroics, Belichick and North Carolina didn’t acknowledge it. To be fair, Belichick has never coached Maye, but based on the report, this is a curious choice.

It wasn’t a great Saturday for North Carolina and Belichick either. They lost 38-10 to Clemson at home and their Twitter/X account only had two posts Sunday. They posted two Javonte Williams touchdowns. Williams is a former UNC running back.

Belichick and the Patriots did not part ways on good terms, based on most reports. Following six Super Bowl wins, but less than stellar results in the post-Tom Brady era, Belichick and owner Robert Kraft’s relationship soured. How this affects UNC and Patriots’ relations moving forward, if Martin’s report is dead on, remains to be seen.
