Robert Griffin III honest about what will not work for Bill Belichick in recruiting
Much will be made of Bill Belichick‘s early successes and failures at North Carolina, and the overreactions are sure to fly. In reality, it may take a bit longer to evaluate how his transition is truly going.
But former ESPN analyst Robert Griffin III, a former Heisman Trophy winner, believes there’s definitely a potential wrong way for Belichick to approach things.
Particularly when it comes to recruiting.
“As a 34-year-old, who this 73-year-old coach probably won’t take any of the advice that I’m giving him, I would say to him, you cannot go into these kids’ houses with your nose up,” Griffin said on The Triple Option podcast. “‘I’m a six-time Super Bowl champ.’ They don’t care.”
How Bill Belichick will relate to recruits is one of the chief concerns of his early tenure. If it goes well and he can stack talent, few will doubt his ability to get the most out of it.
But it’s not necessarily a given, as Griffin points out.
The player-turned-broadcaster pointed out what Bill Belichick needs to do to be successful on the recruiting front.

“How are you going to help me?” Griffin said, highlighting the question recruits will want answered the most. “He’s got connections, and I actually believe this, so I’ll put it out later, so you guys will get this first. I think he’s not recruiting the players. He’s recruiting the parents. That’s what he’s recruiting. Because he can tell those parents, ‘Look at all these connections that I have. Look at what I’ve been able to do. I can accomplish this for your son if he comes and plays for me.'”
Bill Belichick has no shortage of accolades on his resume.
Getting them to translate is the real key for North Carolina. But there’s also one other bonus the new Tar Heels coach will have.
“Of course they increased their NIL collective fund, so they’re going to pay these guys really good money to go to Chapel Hill,” Griffin pointed out.
