Tedy Bruschi questions Bill Belichick coaching North Carolina
Tedy Bruschi loves him some Bill Belichick, having played for the man and won three Super Bowls under his guidance.
But coaching college football at North Carolina? Bruschi couldn’t believe it. He wants more Super Bowls from the GOAT, not “Lawnmower Bowls.”
While it was a good line, Bruschi took to Sunday NFL Countdown to explain his reaction to Belichick taking over the Tar Heels.
“What are we doing here?” Bruschi asked. “I mean, with Bill Belichick going to coach North Carolina. I mean, college football — there’s only one bowl game I want to see Bill Belichick coaching, and that’s the Super Bowl, OK? I don’t want to see him coaching some Lawnmower Bowl in December or January; that’s just not who I am…”
Winning six Super Bowls as a head coach and eight total with the New England Patriots and New York Giants is no joke. But college football is a different animal for Belichick.

There’s no doubt Belichick can bring an instant buzz to North Carolina though.
“I don’t know how there wouldn’t be any interest as to where you bring a Belichick in, and he makes you immediately relevant and well-coached by who he is,” Bruschi said. “Would he make one of these teams that needed a head coach this year an immediate contender? I mean, yes, he would; he is that good. Now, he’s not going to be on the level of six championships New England Patriots or anything like that — but your team would be competent from the get-go …
“That was my initial reaction…I don’t know how this happened,” Bruschi concluded.
During his career as a head coach with the Patriots and Cleveland Browns, Belichick has a 302-165 record.
After parting ways with the Patriots last year, Bill Belichick took a major step into the media world this season. He appears on the ManningCast during the first half when games air on ESPN2 and has a weekly spot on The Pat McAfee Show. He also does work with Underdog Fantasy and appears on Inside The NFL on The CW.
Now, Belichick is returning to coaching – at a place he knows well. His father, a longtime coach at Navy, served as a backfield coach at North Carolina in the 1950s. His son, Steve Belichick, is also wrapping up his first season as the defensive coordinator at Washington under Jedd Fisch.
