UNC officially announces transfer addition of Pete Nance, reveals jersey number
On Saturday, former Northwestern star Pete Nance announced that he was heading to Chapel Hill to play out his final year of eligibility at UNC. Now, UNC has officially announced the addition of Nance, and also assigned him his jersey number for his initial campaign with the Tar Heels.
UNC gave fans their first look at Nance in the Tar Heels uniform on Monday, revealing that he will wear No. 32 next season.
Nance is a big addition for the Tar Heels and head coach Hubert Davis. He is a lengthy forward, standing at 6’10, and comes to Chapel Hill with plenty of experience as a graduate transfer. Last season, Nance was an All-Big Ten selection after averaging 14.6 points and 6.5 rebounds, also shooting over 45% from three-point range. He also shot 49.7% from the field, and averaged 2.7 assists and 1.1 blocks per game.
As part of the 2018 class, Nance came to Northwestern as a four-star recruit and a national Top 60 player, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
Nance, Hubert Davis on the decision to join UNC
UNC made an improbable run to the national title game last season, and the Tar Heels will return most of its contributors from that team. Joining a program like UNC was an opportunity worth pursuing for Nance, and he is looking forward to playing with national championship aspirations in his final year of eligibility.

“I’m extremely excited to join the team at UNC, compete on the biggest stage and compete for a national championship,” said Nance in UNC’s release. “The opportunity to join such an accomplished program with the North Carolina family backing is one I couldn’t pass up. I want to thank Northwestern for the past four years and for such an awesome experience. I made so many memories and relationships that will last a lifetime.”
Brady Manek, a stretch forward, is the most notable departure for Davis and North Carolina. While losing Manek will be a big loss for the Tar Heels, adding Nance could be exactly what UNC needed.
“To complete our roster, we needed a big-time experienced player who could contribute right away,” Davis said. “We found that player in Pete Nance. His character and proven ability, experience and leadership are the perfect fit to our team, program and community. I’m so thankful I will have the opportunity to coach Pete this upcoming season.”
