Urban Meyer explains why now is the best time for Bill Belichick to coach college

Urban Meyer believes Bill Belichick is entering the college football world with the North Carolina Tar Heels at the perfect time.

Joining The Herd with Colin Cowherd, Meyer gave some reasons as to why he’s a believer in the polarizing decision. The college game has certainly changed from the time Meyer was dominating year-in and year-out, and the three-time national championship-winning coach thinks Belichick is set up for immense success.

“I know Coach [Belichick] very well. Went many times up to the Patriots, and what amazed me was how smart he was, how he adapts and [how] he can get things done,” Meyer stated. “It’s a much different game than me and you knew, Colin. For example, you know how many times the coaches are on the road in the month of December in college now? None. It used to be every day. You were gone for three weeks in the month of December, in people’s homes. Now, you don’t do that. It’s simply that they come to your campus, you find out how much they’re being paid, and you give them or you don’t give them.

“The days are gone when you have to write all the emails that are — not emails, text messages and handwritten notes, talking to the players’ girlfriends, his aunt, you know — the high school social studies teacher, the assistant strength coach who’s going to help you get an in at the school. That’s all gone. So, it’s a much different — you know, if there was a time for Coach Belichick to go to college, it’s now. I would say 10 years ago, five years ago, it would’ve been a real struggle, because it’s just something he’s never done. It’s probably something he’s not very comfortable in.

“What you just said — yeah, you’re on the road in those high schools. You don’t do that now. So it’s simply, how much is it — I’m recruiting, Colin Cowherd. I call you up, ‘Colin, how much is it going to cost for you to come to North Carolina?’ You and your agent tell me your number, and we either go or we don’t go.”

When it comes down to simply coaching and developing players, Bill Belichick should excel at that. As for the recruiting part of the ordeal, he’ll have to make sure he hires the right people for the job, but if Urban Meyer is right about his prediction, the NFL legend should do more than fine in Chapel Hill, however long he decides to stick around.
