Vance Honeycutt recaps his walk-off home run for UNC
Vance Honeycutt produced the top moment on Day One of the Super Regionals, hitting a walk-off home run for North Carolina. Putting them up 1-0 against West Virginia, the Tar Heels are now in prime position to advance to the College World Series. A Saturday night win will get them there and make this season’s hard work all pay off.
When asked about the moment, Honeycutt admitted he was not even looking to hit a home run. He just wanted to keep the rally going. With a man on first base and two outs, getting Casey Cook to the plate was his main goal.

“I was just trying to get to Casey,” Honeycutt said. “In that situation, just keep going down the line. With our offense, we feel like if we can continue to move down the order, good things will happen. But I got a good pitch and put a good swing on it.”
North Carolina entered the ninth inning down one. Luke Stevenson was able to tie things up with a lead-off solo home run, giving his teammates the chance to win the game. Alex Madera singled between two strikeouts and put Honeycutt in the batter’s box.
In Honeycutt’s defense, Cook has been one of North Carolina’s best hitters this season. He has an average of .340 and is getting on base over 43% of the time. Going 0-3 on the day was not his best performance but Cook did walk and score a run earlier in the evening.

But hitting the home run is something the Tar Heels will take every day of the week. Honeycutt has been one of the best players in college baseball this season and came up in the biggest moment of them all on Friday.
North Carolina looking for first CWS appearance since 2018
North Carolina last made the College World Series in 2018, currently having a four-year drought despite consistently making the Super Regionals. Three losses have come right before getting to Omaha, something head coach Steve Forbes is hoping to change.
Playing in Chapel Hill for the regional and Super Regional has certainly helped, a nice reward for performing well during the regular season. And now, one more win against West Virginia will get them to the CWS. Honeycutt called game in the first matchup and hopes to do the same on Saturday.
