The North Carolina Tar Heels had a very strong showing over the past week in Charlotte, cruising to a championship in the ACC Baseball Tournament. A key part of UNC’s strong week was freshman outfielder Vance Honeycutt.

Honeycutt has been a big part of UNC’s game all year long, but that was especially on display in the ACC Tournament. Across four games in the week, Honeycutt was 6-for-15 (.400) with four home runs, 10 RBI, five runs and four walks.

After UNC secured the title game victory with a 9-5 win over NC State, Honeycutt led the celebration for the Tar Heels on the field.

As a freshman this season, Honeycutt is batting .279 with 19 home runs and 44 RBI. He was walked 31 times and has been hit by pitch seven times, giving him an on-base percentage of .382. Honeycutt also has 28 stolen bases and 55 runs on the year.

Honeycutt’s strong week helped UNC secure a regional hosting spot

UNC was firing on all cylinders all tournament long, and opened the week with a 9-2 victory over Clemson on Tuesday. The Tar Heels didn’t play again until Friday, and faced off against top-seeded Virginia Tech on Friday. UNC had no problems, earning a big 10-0 win over the Hokies. The Tar Heels then beat Notre Dame 7-2 in the semifinal on Saturday before taking down NC State on Sunday for the title.

Honeycutt’s strong showing in Charlotte helped UNC secure the tournament championship, solidifying the Tar Heels’ resume entering the NCAA Tournament selection. On Sunday night, the NCAA revealed that UNC will be one of 16 regional hosts, meaning that postseason baseball is returning to Chapel Hill.

UNC enters regionals with an overall record of 38-19 overall record. Playing at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill will be a big advantage for the Tar Heels, who are 29-6 at home this season. On the road, UNC is just 5-12, excluding a 4-1 mark at neutral sites. UNC is certainly a team that nobody hopes to draw, as the Tar Heels enter the postseason on a seven-game winning streak.
