Virginia Tech’s Jaydon Young was supposed to be transferring elsewhere during this portal cycle. Now, almost four weeks later, he’s instead heading to a blue blood with an in-conference move by him.

Young committed to North Carolina out of the NCAA Transfer Portal on Friday. That was according to Greenlight Media earlier this morning as Young has since shared that news on social media as well.

“Home is where ya heart is,” Young captioned the post of his graphic.

Earlier in the portal cycle, Young originally committed to High Point. Instead, though, after nearly a month since that announcement, he will be ending up at UNC.

Young will be staying in conference with his commitment as he’d spent the past two seasons at Virginia Tech. He made 58 appearances, 10 being starts, for the Hokies as an underclassman in averaging 5.3 points (34.8% FG, 31% 3PT), 1.3 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game. He developed those to 8.1 points (34.7% FG, 29.6% 3PT), 1.7 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game this past season as a sophomore.

A Goldsboro native, Young played high school basketball at Greensboro Day School. He was a Top-225 overall recruit there as a three-star in the 2023 cycle. He also rated as a Top-50 SG in the class and the No. 6 player out of North Carolina. That’s according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Now, per the latest update to On3’s Industry Ranking of 2025’s Top Transfer Portal Players, Young ranked similarly. He’s in the Top-550 overall players and is in the Top-150 at shooting guard.

Young is one of five transfers this offseason from Blacksburg. He’s now committed along with Brandon Rechsteiner (Colorado State), Patrick Wessler (UNC Wilmington), and Rodney Brown (Loyola Marymount). Ryan Jones is the only one still available from last season’s roster at VT.

UNC is then now up to five commitments in the portal with this pickup of Young. Coming to Chapel Hill with him will be Henri Veesaar (Arizona), Kyan Evans (Colorado State), Jarin Stevenson (Alabama), and Jonathan Powell (West Virginia). That, though, is despite losing five key transfers from last season’s roster with Ian Jackson (St. John’s), Jalen Washington (Vanderbilt), Elliot Cadeau (Michigan), Cade Tyson, and, for now, Ven-Allen Lubin. That has the Tar Heels’ at No. 50 in On3’s 2025 Team Transfer Portal Rankings.
