Former Washington cornerback Thaddeus Dixon has committed to Bill Belichick and North Carolina out of the NCAA transfer portal, according to On3’s Hayes Fawcett.

Dixon, the No. 2-rated CB in the transfer portal per the On3 Transfer Portal Rankings, chose the Tar Heels over the likes of Michigan, Tennessee, Ole Miss and a return to Washington

Dixon has spent the last two seasons with Washington, including the national championship run in 2023. He has played a total of 26 games with the Huskies, recording 66 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, 18 PBUs, and forcing a fumble.

This year is when Dixon really stepped into a starting role, being first on the field in all but one game — Washington’s bowl game vs. Louisville.

The Huskies finished the season 6-7 under first-year head coach Jedd Fisch. They were invited to the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl, where they suffered a tough 35-34 loss to Louisville on New Year’s Eve. Dixon was a hold-over from the Kalen DeBoer era and has national championship game experience from the 2023 season.

He’s now set to join a regime under new North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick, who is off to a strong start building his roster through the transfer portal. Adding the likes of Dixon, one of college football’s top defensive backs, adds to that trend.

Dixon was a JUCO product, coming out of Long Beach City College as a three-star prospect. He was the No. 27 overall recruit in the 2023 JUCO cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, which is a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services.

The portal officially opened on Monday, Dec. 9, 2024. More than 2,800 FBS scholarship players entered their names into the NCAA’s transfer database during the 2023-24 school year. Removing those who withdrew or went pro, the final total sat at 2,707 transfers.

That means roughly 25 percent of all FBS scholarship players hit free agency in one year, per On3’s Pete Nakos. It remains to be seen how those numbers stack up during the 2024-25 school year.
