On a play where quarterback Drake Maye underthrows a ball for JJ Jones, a Tar Heel defensive back tips the ball into the air. Jones keeps his concentration on the tip drill, though, to make the play.
JJ Jones is a four-wide receiver from the Class of 2021. A native of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Jones has already promised to be an important wide receiver for North Carolina. After preserving his redshirt as a freshman, only playing in two games, Jones is looking to make an even bigger impact in 2022.
Who is the North Carolina quarterback?
JJ Jones doesn’t know who is going to be throwing him passes during games, yet. The quarterback battle to replace Sam Howell is raging on between Drake Maye and Jacolby Criswell.

Maye, who is seen under throwing the pass to JJ Jones, is a redshirt freshman and a former four-star recruit. Criswell, for his part, is a sophomore and a four-star recruit in his own right.
“First when we got here, it was kind of tough because we knew that we were both battling, so, not many words were said in the beginning,” Criswell said in a press conference. “Now, as we’ve gotten used to it and used to what we’re supposed to be doing, we got into film and the competitive edge is always going to be there, if coach asks a question, one of us is going to be the first to answer, so we’re doing that.”
“But we’re making sure to hang out after. When Sam comes to town, we all go hang out together, just those types of things. Making sure the guys see that there’s no type of beef between us, we’re cool as can be, that type of thing.”
