WATCH: Ty Chandler runs for 53-yard touchdown to take lead over Notre Dame
North Carolina and Notre Dame are in a shootout in South Bend, and running back Ty Chandler has been a big contributor.
Running back Ty Chandler broke off a 53-yard run on the Tar Heels’ first possession of the second half to take a brief 20-17 lead.
Irish quarterback Jack Coan quickly ran for 21 yards for his own touchdown, and Notre Dame regained a 24-20 lead.
Chandler has 81 yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns, and quarterback Sam Howell is 20-for-26 with 275 yards and an interception. The quarterback is the team’s leading rusher with 16 carries for 88 yards, including a 31-yard scamper. He has one rushing touchdown, which was his 100th touchdown for Carolina.
Matchup in South Bend lacking stops
There is little defense in the game, as both teams had scored on every possession in the first half after trading punts on their initial drives to start the game. There have been near 1,000 total yards of offense and 49 first downs.

The North Carolina defense has allowed several big plays to the Irish, including a 91-yard run to Kyren Williams. Notre Dame scored touchdowns on three of their first four possessions of the second half. The defense appears tired, missing tackles and committing unnecessary penalties. Carolina has been penalized eight times for 71 yards. The most recent offense, a pass interference call, kept a Notre Dame drive alive late in the fourth quarter.
Ja’Qurious Conley has had a nice night returning kicks for the Tar Heels. On four returns, he has 89 yards, including a 40-yard return that set up a field goal before the half.
Carolina is looking to win their first game ever in South Bend. They are 0-12 all-time at Notre Dame, and they are 2-19 all-time against Notre Dame.
