WATCH: UNC basketball honors legendary head coach Roy Williams

Roy Williams retired after last season after a long run as the head coach of UNC basketball. At halftime of Saturday’s game between UNC and NC State, the Tar Heels honored Williams with a touching video that played inside the Dean Smith Center.

The video was voiced over by former UNC point guard Marcus Paige, one of the best point guards that Williams guided.

“We dadgum love you, Coach Williams,” the video was captioned.

Williams will go down as one of the best coaches in college basketball history. He spent 48 years as a coach, including 33 as a head coach. Williams began his coaching career with 15 years at Kansas before spending 18 in Chapel Hill.

Now, Williams will forever be a part of the UNC basketball family, and he was honored with a banner in the Dean Dome rafters on Saturday.

UNC honored Williams during a game against NC State, which is fitting considering his success against the Wolfpack. In his career, Williams went 33-5 in games against NC State. Williams is still very well-versed in the rivalry, as he shared a clear message with the UNC crowd while he was being honored at halftime.

Williams has a historic resume between Kansas and UNC

Williams’ numbers as a head coach stack up with the best of the best in college basketball history. When Williams retired, UNC listed a very long list of accolades, records, and accomplishments that are undoubtedly legendary.

Here are some of Williams’ accomplishments while a head coach at UNC and Kansas.

Williams also coached 11 consensus All-Americans during his coaching career. He reached 900 career wins faster than any other coach in NCAA history, doing so in 1,161 games and 33 seasons. Williams is UNC’s second-winningest head coach of all time, and he is the third-winningest coach in Kansas history. He is the only coach in NCAA history with more than 400 wins at multiple schools.
