Massive news came out of Evanston on Friday as the Northwestern football teams had hazing allegations drop. An investigation was conducted by the University following the conclusion of the 2022 season, with their findings being called “credible.”

Now, on Saturday night, a statement has been released by Wildcat players. They have called the accusations by Northwestern “exaggerated and twisted.” They believe the “fabrications” are an attempt to bring them and the coaching staff down.

“The recent allegations brought forth are exaggerated and twisted,” the statement read via Adam Rittenberg of ESPN. “It is disheartening to see the allegations brought forth against our team have been exaggerated and twisted into lies. These fabrications have been made with the intention of harming our program and tarnish the reputation of our dedicated players and coaching staff. We firmly deny the validity of these accusations and stand united in our assertion that they do not reflect the true character of our team.”

Additionally, the players made sure to note that head coach Pat Fitzgerald had no knowledge of the alleged incidents. They claim everything was brought to his attention when the investigation began and “stand behind him” being Northwestern’s head coach.

“It is crucial to note that our Head Coach, Pat Fitzgerald, was not involved in any of the alleged incidents in any way, shape, or form. Coach Fitzgerald had no knowledge of these allegations until they were brought to his attention during the investigation. Throughout his tenure, Coach Fitzgerald has consistently prioritized the well-being and development of his players, and we stand behind him in his unwavering commitment to our team.”

Earlier on Saturday, Northwestern itself released a statement on the situation, calling hazing “unacceptable” and how it goes against the University’s “core values.” Fitzgerald has been suspended from the team for two weeks and will not receive pay during his time away.

Fitzgerald is a legend inside the Northwestern program, both as a coach and a player. He spent four seasons playing linebacker in the 1990s before being named the head coach in 2006. An overall record of 110-101 while appearing in 10 bowl games and two Big Ten Championship games gives him iconic status with the Wildcats.

Even so, the hazing allegations potentially throw a wrench in his time in Evanston. The players will defend their head coach throughout the entire process, make sure it was known he had no knowledge of any incidents.
