LOOK: Avery Davis releases heartfelt statement following season-ending ACL injury
Avery Davis got more bad news on the injury front earlier this week week when he suffered a torn ACL for the second straight year. Friday, he released a heartfelt statement via Twitter and confirmed he’ll remain around the Notre Dame program.
Davis tore the ACL in his right knee, less than a year after suffering the same injury in his left leg. A favorite among Fighting Irish players, Davis received an outpouring of support after the news came out and thanked the fans and his teammates for it in his statement.
“I put everything I had into trying to be a legendary player at Notre Dame,” Davis wrote, in part. “I worked my ass off day in and day out and rolled with every punch that was thrown at me. Resilience was something that was ingrained in me, and eventually I got good at picking my self back up. I never would’ve imaged that my time at this school would’ve went the way that it did, let alone end the way that it did.
“My last moments in game and in practice as a Notre Dame football player ended in ACL tears. As bad as that is, the hardest part about all of this is the lack of closure granted from it. The lingering question of ‘why?’ chases my mind 24/7 but I won’t let myself fall victim to it.”

Tommy Rees reacts to Avery Davis injury
After the news came out about Davis’ injury, Notre Dame offensive coordinator Tommy Rees shared what Davis means to him and the program in a post-practice press conference.
“You’re not going to find a guy that’s more respected than Avery Davis,” Rees said. “From his peers to the coaches, the way he’s handled himself, you want to talk about heartbreak for a program, everybody has felt that for Avery. For him to fight through everything early in his career, to find a role, own that role, be voted a captain, tear his knee, decide to come back and then for it to happen again, you can’t ever justify it.
“All we can do right now is love AD and give him our support and be there for him through these tough times. You saw the impact on the group last night. You could feel it. That’s who AD is. There’s not a guy in this program that wouldn’t do anything for that kid. We’re going to love him and support him and be there for him.”
